Celebrating Valentine’s Day with a special meal out?

“Sitting along the perimeter of a restaurant can be quieter, with sounds not coming from all sides. Sometimes booths or high-backed chairs can block some of the background noise too.”

Are you planning to surprise the one you love by taking them out for a meal this Valentine’s Day?
If you or your partner have less than perfect hearing then eating out in restaurants can be challenging, especially at busy times. The combination of background noise and chatter can mean that your meal is not as relaxed or enjoyable as you would wish.
There are, however, some things you can do to help:
Choose your restaurant carefully – look at online reviews and avoid anywhere described as bustling, loud or noisy
When you book, check with the restaurant whether they play music, or even if there is a possibility of live music
Avoid the peak rush hours if possible; eating a little earlier in the evening may well be quieter than later
Ask for a quiet table, away from the bar, kitchen, or main doors
Sitting along the perimeter of a restaurant can be quieter, with sounds not coming from all sides. Sometimes booths or high-backed chairs can block some of the background noise too
Try to be seated where there is good lighting so you can see your partner’s face; dim lights or candlelight may be romantic but they don’t help with lip-reading
Do explain your hearing loss to restaurant staff, particularly if you have a designated server for the evening, most will be understanding and do what they can to help
If you wear a hearing aid, experiment with the volume; it might help to turn it down
Check beforehand to see what programmes your hearing aid has, experiment to see what works best with background noise
If you have a modern hearing aid it may be fitted with a directional microphone, this usually works best if you are directly facing the person you wish to hear
